Papaya is native to tropical America, from southern Mexico to the Andes in South America. It is brought to Caribbean, Pacific Islands and Europe by Spanish explorers in the middle of 17th century. Papaya skin, pulp and seeds contain various kinds of nutritients such as carotenoids, vitamin C, minerals and polyphenols. When unripe fruit is cut, white liquid containing papain, a kind of protease, is smeared. The powder refined from this liquid has an excellent detergency and it is known that it helps alleviate acnes. According to a recent study, polysaccharides from papaya fruit has the ability to remove DPPH and superoxide and to retain mosture as strongly as that of hyaluronic acid and glycerol. These characteristic makes papaya valuable as a natural moisturizer with anti-oxidative effect.
