SYNTHALAT SF 260 is a styrene-modified short-oil alkyd resin. This is recommended for very fast-drying primers, wash primers, fast-drying synthetic resin-based paints, and hammer-finish paints. It has applications in primers and lacquers, marine coatings, metal coatings, marine transportation, industrial coatings, and maintenance.

- Film Properties and Processing
Synthalat SF 260, a styrene-modified alkyd resin, is used preferably as the sole binder for very fast drying primers and topcoats. It is also very well suited for air- and stove-drying hammer finish paints. With Synthalat SF 260 drying times can be achieved that are comparable to those of physically drying binders. Synthalat SF 260 has a substantial pigment loading which makes possible especially primers with a relatively high pigment volume concentration (up to 45%) without adversely affecting the mechanical film properties. For wash primers and anti-corrosive primers the type and amount of pigments and fillers are very important. Besides zinc chromate and red iron oxide particularly flaked fillers like talc have given good results. Incorporation of small amounts of special types of calcium carbonate (e.g. Millicarb OG) is possible. To obtain a good overspray tolerance and also with nitrocellulose, it is necessary to maintain pigment volume concentration in primers of at least about 40%. For high gloss topcoats, however, the pigment volume concentration must be kept below 20% if possible to obtain a good gloss retention. While driers should be avoided in highly pigmented mainly to ensure of a good overspray tolerance, topcoats require small amounts of cobalt naphthenate or octoate to promote oxidative cross-linking. Relative to 100% Synthalat SF 260 we recommend addition of 0.02 - 0.04 % cobalt metal. Lead and manganese driers should be avoided if possible because of the storage stability of the finished paints. Incorporation of common anti-skinning agents is always advisable. Dilution should be preferably with aromatic hydrocarbons. Addition of higher esters such as ethyl glycol acetate has proved advantageous for spray application.
