CYMEL® 254 Resin
- CASE Ingredients Functions
- Crosslinking Agent
CYMEL® 254 Resin functions as a crosslinking agent within the CASE Ingredients domain, particularly falling under the monomers and intermediates and chain extenders and crosslinkers categories. Tailored for the automotive, transportation, paints, and coatings sectors, this clear liquid is especially suitable for automotive OEM coatings. It exhibits compatibility with acrylics, alkyds, epoxies (EP), and polyesters. Primarily designed for metal substrates, this primer offers clarity and uniformity in its liquid form.

- Catalysis
CYMEL 254 resin responds to catalysis by weak acids. For acceptable cure response at baking temperatures above 125℃, in most instances the carboxyl functionality of the other resins in a formulation would be an adequate catalyst. If catalyst addition is found to be necessary, then virtually any soluble acid would be effective. Normally, phosphate esters, or sulfonic acids are recommended. The acid concentration would have been determined for each system.
- Stability
FORMULATION STABILITY; The stability of formulated systems containing CYMEL 254 rein can be enhanced by the addition of alcohols, amines or a combination of these. Low molecular weight primary alcohols such as methanol and n-butanol are most effective. Recommended amines are tertiary amines such as tri-ethylamine of dimethyl ethanolamine at a concentration of 0.5-1.0% on total binder solids.; STORAGE STABILITY; CYMEL 254 resin has a shelf life of 1 year from the date of manufacture when stored at temperatures between 5°C and 30°C packed in unopened original containers .CYMEL 254 resin must be kept indoors and avoided the direct sunlight exposure. Although lower temperatures are not detrimental to stability, its viscosity will increase, possibly making the resin difficult to pump or pour. The viscosity will reduce again on warming, but care should be taken to avoid excessive local heat as this can cause an irreversible increase in viscosity.

- HIGHLIGHTS
BENEFITS; Fast cure response; Low formaldehyde release; No strong acid catalyst requirement; Superior stain, water and corrosion resistance properties; Good flow, leveling and wetting properties; APPLICATION AREAS; Automotive enamels; General Industries enamels; Coil coatings; Primers
- Backbone Polymer Selection
CYMEL 254 resin will react with hydroxyl, amide, carboxyl and thiol functional polymers or resins. Similar to other melamine resins, it not only crosslinks with the above functionalities, but also self-condenses readily.
