- Chemical Name
- 1,10-Phenanthroline, 2-methylpentane-2,4-diol
ACTIV-8® HGL Drier Stabilizer and Accelerator is used to improve dry times in water-borne paints and coatings that dry by oxidative polymerization. ACTIV-8 HGL functions as a chelating agent for the primary driers cobalt and manganese. It also helps to stabilize water-reducible alkyd and alkyd emulsion paints against loss-of-dry on aging.

- Applications
ACTIV-8 HGL is used in combination with manganese and/or cobalt driers in coatings that cure by oxidative polymerization to improve dry times. In general, ACTIV-8 HGL is used in waterborne coatings. Long term aging stability is also improved, especially in waterborne coatings where loss-of-dry often occurs.; Why use ACTIV-8®?; In water-reducible alkyd coatings that use cobalt as the drier, ACTIV-8 HGL will prevent loss of dry.; How much ACTIV-8® is needed?; For water-reducible alkyds use 5 parts (as supplied) of ACTIV-8 HGL per 1 part of cobalt metal.

- HIGHLIGHTS
ACTIV-8 is NOT a drier.; 1,10-phenanthroline is a chelating agent.; ACTIV-8 works with cobalt and manganese driers to stabilize and accelerate the drying time.; ACTIV-8 HGL is a water miscible drier-accelerator.; The addition of ACTIV-8 HGL to the waterborne coating will inhibit the loss of dry.
- Storage Condition
To maintain product quality, protect from freezing which can cause crystallization. If crystallization occurs, gently warm the product to dissolve the crystals.; ACTIV-8 HGL will react with iron causing a reddish discoloration to white and light-colored paints. Care should be taken to insure ACTIV-8 HGL, do not come in contact with iron contaminants and is stored in lined metal containers.; Zinc in the form of zinc drier, zinc phosphate or zinc oxide blocks the activity of ACTIV-8 HGL. If ACTIV-8 HGL is to be used in a coating containing zinc, preblend ACTIV-8 HGL with the metal drier prior to exposure to zinc to allow for proper chelation.

- Drier Recommendations
For waterborne coatings it is recommended to use 0.1 - 0.25% ACTIV-8 HGL, based on resin solids, in combinations with cobalt or manganese driers such that there is a 5 to 1 ratio of ACTIV-8 HGL to metal drier.
- Compatible Polymers and Resins
- Alkyds
- Polyurethanes (PU)
- Alkyd Drying and Metallic Driers
Alkyd coatings form a film and dry by an oxidative process; Oxygen from the air cross-links the resin; The oxygen up-take process is catalyzed by the presence of certain transition metals; Cobalt (top drier) and manganese (through drier) are the most active metallic driers; Additional metallic driers include zirconium, calcium, zinc, iron, and rare earths
