Flamtard V

Chemical Family
Silicates

Flamtard V grades are inorganic silicate based flame retardant synergists, chemically modified to control the glass transition temperatures over which they soften (470-500 °C). Above this they convert into a highly viscous molten state in which they can help to reduce the creation and propagation of micro cracks in char formation during polymer combustion. Flamtard V can also improve adhesion of metal oxide residues and oxidized organic materials, leading to mechanically stronger chars. Flamtard V can be used in mica filled silicon based security cables, flame retardant intumescent PVC and PUR materials for the building and construction industry, polyamides and polyolefins. For other polymers, check the potential stability with TGA first. This proven replacement for antimony trioxide can be used alone or in conjunction with other materials in the Flamtard range.

Flame and Smoke Retardants

Flame retardants are used in polymers to impart a resistance to combustion and to prevent the development of flame and toxic gas, Applications where polymers are used in the presence of high numbers of people (e.g. mass transport and buildings) have approval standards that demand the atmost performance from flame retardant additives. Particular attention is applied to the reduction of smoke in such applications. Flamtard products developed by William Blythe act on these two areas of performance and are used in polymer systems ranging from PVC to High Temperature Polyamides.. The physical and mechanical properties of polymer compounds are carefully attuned to their final application. Solid polymer additives, like flame retardants, must be compatible with the polymer and must not impair key performance properties, nor adversely affect processing on high volume production lines, Flamtard products are successfully used in polyethylene, PVC, unsaturated polyesters, polyamides and PBT.
